Many of the following classic board games have been around for centuries. They have withstood the test of time and still retain their popularity to this day.

Chess

Chess is a strategy game played with 32 pieces on a board of 64 squares. Players attempt to trap the opponent's king through checkmate by moving and capturing pieces while at the same time defending their own pieces. Commonly referred to as a sport, chess is one of the most popular two player strategy games in the world.

Chess sets come in a large number of varieties. You can find chess sets made out of glass or hand carved from materials like wood or stone. Some have themes, such as Medieval, or Star Wars, while others function as decorative pieces. A soft vinyl board is often the preferred choice of competitive players.

You may want to consider buying a chess clock once you have mastered the basics of the game. A chess clock, or timer, increases the tension and makes the game more exciting as it limits the amount of time a player has to make a move. A player loses if he doesn’t make a move before the timer expires.

Backgammon

The two player game of backgammon is played with two dice and a board with 30 pieces. Each player takes turns rolling the dice and tries to move his pieces around the board to the opposite side, without getting trapped in the centre.

Go

Go is another two player strategy game where players try to capture their opponent's pieces by surrounding them. Each player takes turn to place a piece on the board and the number of empty points each player's pieces hold will determine the final score. Checkers

A truly classic game that is played by two, American checkers is played on an 8 x 8 square board. Also known as draughts, the object of the game is to capture all the opponent’s pieces by jumping diagonally over them. International draughts, a popular version of checkers, is played on a 10 x 10 board.

Chinese checkers

The object of Chinese checkers is to move your pieces to the opposite side of the star shaped board where the game is played on. As in American checkers, you jump over pieces to capture them. Despite the name, Chinese checkers originated in the United States.

Mahjong

Usually played with four players,  mahjong is a gambling board game played with tiles. Each player try to form similar groups of tiles by selecting and discarding tiles. Mahjong sets usually contains 144 tiles but some have only 136 tiles. Sets from the United States and Japan have more tiles. The game also comes in a card version, which comes in handy when travelling.

Mahjong is alternatively known as mah jong, mahjong, or ma jiang.
