Choose Binoculars to Fit Your Needs

Choose Binoculars to Fit Your Needs

In simple terms, binoculars consist of two telescopes mounted together to make images appear closer than they actually are. A good pair of binoculars reduces the visual distance by eliminating the space between you and the area or object you want to view.

Binoculars typically come in two sizes: standard and compact. Some companies do offer monoculars. Popular options include Nikon binoculars, Canon binoculars, Zeiss binoculars and Tasco binoculars.

Compact binoculars

You can pop your compact binoculars into your pocket, handbag or backpack so that you can get up close and personal wherever you go. Discrete pocket-size models from companies such as Tasco and Condor offer flexibility, mobility and good viewing capabilities in a small, lightweight product. Some compact models can weigh less than 500 grams.

Standard-size binoculars

Standard-size binoculars provide a clear image, making them ideal for birdwatching or viewing animals at a distance. Ranging from midsize to large, standard binoculars from companies such as Sakura weigh between 550 grams and 1kilogram.

To keep the image as steady as possible mount larger, heavier models geared toward astronomy and nature viewing on a tripod.

Monoculars

Monoculars consist of a single eyepiece and are ideal for stationary viewing. Mount your monocular on a tripod and use it with your camera. For hunting, birdwatching and photography, a hands-free spotting scope is ideal. Some of these models sport powerful magnification and produce high-quality images. Use compact monoculars for occasional use.

Take Pictures With Your Binoculars

Take Pictures With Your Binoculars

Modern binoculars can do a lot more than just magnify faraway images. Some models include a built-in digital camera so that you can store images on an internal memory and then download them to your computer like any other digital camera. Some binoculars even allow you to record video.

Whether you choose the Bushmaster Bino Cam or another model, digital camera binoculars make it easy to locate an image and immediately photograph it. No longer will you have to dig around for your camera while the birds fly away.

See in the Dark With Night-Vision Binoculars

See in the Dark With Night-Vision Binoculars

Night-vision binoculars amplify existing light and produce a green-coloured image so that you can effectively see in the dark. Use them to scan your property for night-prowlers, take them on your evening boat trip or observe wildlife at night with ease. There are three classes of night-vision binoculars, indicating which type of light intensifier tube the binoculars use:

  • 1st generation binoculars: Inexpensive first generation binoculars provide adequate night-vision image quality.

  • 2nd generation binoculars: Mid-range second generation binoculars provide moderate night-vision image quality.

  • 3rd generation binoculars: High-end third generation binoculars produce high-quality night-vision images.

Read item listings carefully, looking for generation information, if you want binoculars that support true night-vision.

Not-quite night vision

Items that mention night-vision but do not list a generation will provide clear and bright viewing in the dark, but not true night-vision. These are a good option for people who just want to see a little better at night.

Evaluate Binocular Features

Evaluate Binocular Features

Before purchasing, look for important binocular features and product specifications.

Magnification

The function of binoculars is to make distant objects appear closer, how much closer it will appear depends on magnification. For example, binoculars with 10X magnification make objects ten times closer to your position. For general binocular use and wide-area viewing, a magnification of 7X to 12X should suffice.

The higher the magnification, the steadier you need to keep your hands. For more stability, and better viewing, set binoculars with more than 12X magnification on a tripod.

Zoom

Use a zoom to control the range of magnification, for instance, from 7 to 12X.

Aperture

Aperture represents the diameter of the front lens, is measured in millimetres and determines the amount of light captured in an image.

Generally, binoculars have a two-number designation: the first indicates magnification and the second represents aperture. For instance, a pair of 7 x 30 binoculars magnifies an image seven times and has a 30 millimetre opening.

An aperture of 20 to 60 millimetres is ideal for recreational binocular use. For astronomical purposes buy a larger aperture, such as 70 or 80 millimetres.

Field-of-view

The size of the area you can see through a pair of binoculars is called the field-of-view. Wider fields-of-view allow you to see more scenery, thus making it easier to scan the sky for birds, track fast-moving objects and observe nature.

Prisms

Prisms reverse an image and turn it the right side up. Located between the objective lenses and eyepieces, they come in two designs:

  • Roof prisms : Small prisms allow binoculars to come in smaller sizes.

  • Porro prisms : Larger prisms allow a larger field of view in larger binoculars.

Focus

Binoculars usually come with a centre focus to simultaneously focus each eyepiece. You may also find that optional focus adjustments may also fit your needs:

  • Diopter control: Balance your view for each eye.

  • Individual focus: Precisely focus on objects. Models designed for marine or astronomical use usually include an individual focus feature.

Weather

If you think you'll be using your binoculars near water, whether for hunting, hiking or camping in the rain or on a boat, you may want to consider waterproof binoculars. Fogproof binoculars also offer protection in a heavy fog or light drizzle.
