Understand Necklace Sizing

There are traditionally seven different lengths that necklaces are available in. The length of the necklace will determine where the necklace will hang to on the wearer's body.

  • 25cm to 32.5cm necklaces: Short necklaces, like chokers, wrap closely around the neck and measure about 25cm to 32.5cm long.

  • 40cm to 45cm necklaces:   Necklaces, strands, and chokers typically measure from 40cm to 45cm in length, staying fairly close to the neck. Attached pendants lie above the breastbone.

  • 42.5cm to 50cm necklaces:  Necklaces, and strands, measuring between 42.5cm and 50cm long, meet at top of breastbone, and can attach pendants or lockets.

  • 50cm to 60cm necklaces:  Necklaces that are 50 to 60cm long meet at the top of the bust line. Certain strands, and pendant necklaces also come in these lengths.

  • 70cm to 80cm necklaces: Long necklaces measuring 70cm to 80cm will hang at or below the bust line. These necklaces can also be worn as a doubled strand.

  • Necklaces 100cm and longer:  Necklaces measuring over 100cm long can hang at, or below, the navel. They are often worn either doubled or tripled.

  • Necklaces 120cm and longer: Often used for long strands, necklaces measuring over 120cm in length normally wrap or knot around the neck without a clasp.

Jewellery Shopping Checklist

Jewellery Shopping Checklist

Buying jewellery can be an extremely fun and rewarding process, but it’s important for buyers to be consumer savvy as well. Buyers should read thoroughly through the listing description of jewellery items, before committing themselves to a purchase.

  1. Take care when sellers use valuations to indicate the amount of savings on a particular piece of jewellery. Such valuations may not always be correct for the market you are buying in. For example, a seller may suggest a diamond has been valued at $2,000, however in actual fact, if the diamond was resold onto the market, this may not actually reflect what the seller would receive for it.

  2. Ensure that you read the seller’s description to locate the material condition of the jewellery that you’re interested in buying. For example, if you’re interested in buying a gemstone, try to find out if the gemstone has been treated with extra coating or materials to improve its appearance (as opposed to an untreated gemstone). If you can’t locate this information then it’s highly recommended that you ask the seller directly, so that you are able to get a better idea of the actual quality of the gemstone.

  3. Be aware of any jewellery terminology being used by sellers. Sellers may use common terms in their listing descriptions, which are known within the jewellery industry, but not commonly known or understood by consumers. For example, the word “synthetic” is actually another term for “artificial”. If you’re not sure of what a particular word means, then don’t hesitate to ask the seller directly or to seek external advice.

  4. Ensure that you confirm with sellers about the country of origin of a piece of jewellery. For example, if the seller describes a gemstone as a Tanzanian emerald, it’s best to check with the seller if the emerald has actually been mined in Tanzania, rather than assuming it has been.
